                     History

The heavily wooded area on the Prahova Valley where Sinaia is located today was inhabited in the eighteenth century, the first inhabitants who settled in the virgin forest, at the foot of Bucegi, were the monks of Sinaia monastery, founded between 1690-1695 by Mihail Cantacuzino and some others who were dealing with the security of the monastery and the cultivation of the estates. The city took the name of the monastery, and the monastery was named after the trip to Palestine and Sinai of the lord.

In the early nineteenth century, the entire Prahova Valley was organized as a single commune, named Podul Neagului, including the entire valley, from Predeal to Posada. In 1864, the villages of Posada and Podul Neagului were united with the Comarnic commune.

On August 5 1866, Prince Carol I of Romania reached Sinaia monastery, located then in Podul Neagului commune. He was involved in organizing the region and in 1874 the remaining outside villages of Comarnic commune were named Sinaia, a commune residing at Busteni.

A report dated at December 1 1874 is certifying that the commune residence was moved to Sinaia, who has received her name that year. On may 9 1880, Sinaia acquired the status of urban commune and included the villages of Izvor, Furnica and Poiana Tapului. The urban property of the town was detached from the Podul Neagului commune, who has moved his residency back to Comarnic. In 1884, the villages of Predeal, azuga, Busteni and poiana Tapului separated from Sinaia forming the commune of Predeal, while Sinaia commune remained with the villages of Izvoru and Furnica. At the same time, the Romanian royal family had settled the summer residence at Sinaia,  constructing the complex Peles Castle. At the end of the nineteenth century, the commune had a population of 2210 inhabitants, a mixed school attended in 1899 by 103 students, hotels, a station on the railway Ploiesti-Brasov, a hydrotherapy clinic and the Sinaia Monastery. In the same period, the city become  industrialized, occurring a timber factory, property of Popovici and Costinesce Industrialists, the last one owning a hydraulic lime factory. Also in January 1892 it was opened a factory of iron nail, which had 45 employees, romanian and german. From an administrative point of view, the commune was residence of Peles from the Prahova County.

In 1925, the Sosec Yearbook recorded that Sinaia had sewer systemand running water, from the spring of Peles and Vanturisului, a hydroelectric plant of 1500 horsepower which powered the public electric lighting.

Towards the end of the interwar period, Sinaia had 3906 inhabitants and was de residence of the rural district of Sinaia in the prahoav County.

In the 1950’s, Sinaia passed to the district administration of Campina from prahova region, and after 1952 from the Ploiesti region.

                                  Description of the Sinaia resort

The city’s history began in the eighteenth century when the first inhabitants were the monks of Sinaia Monastery. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Carpathians, the resort is protected by the Bucegi and Garbova massives.

The legends of Bucegi mountains speak of Zamolxis, the dacian king, who lived in a cave now known as Ialomicioarei.

The organization of the resort began with the visit of King Carol I when he discovered the potential of the area. The industrialization of the city resulted in the emergence of a timber and a nail factorys, so at the mid-nineteenth century the resort already has sewers and running water.

Those who want to enjoy the unique landscapes of the area can go up to Cota 2000(Elevation), the means of transport used are the cable car and gondola lift station, or to the Stana Regala,  a destination that was preferred as the name suggests, by the royal family. For tourists who are not fond of hights, the city’s architecture with neogerman and saxon influences can please. Most of these items can be easily seen by visiting the Peles Castle.
