We are Chiriac Alexandra and Grădinaru Alex, master students at Tourism and Regional Development, 1st year and we would like to share with you the most important ideas regarding the balneo-climateric resort of Praid.
Why did we choose the Praid resort?
Although it is not the first time we are visiting Praid, we know that it has a huge potential and that it can become an important destination not only for us, the Romanians, but for foreigners as well. The area is extremely beautiful and quiet, and the benefits offered by the salt mine for health are miraculous.
The description of Praid
On the western side, Praid is the gate of Harghita county. Here, the valley narrows even more, and the mountains appear much closer. The landscape is a little paradise for the ones who do not limit to enjoying the surroundings only by driving by, from cars and buses.
As a concept – Praid is related to salt and to everything related to it. But the explanation of relating it only to salt would be a mistake. If we take into consideration the number of employees from the salt mine, until 1958-1959, there were not even one hundred and only 10-15% were from Praid. In the salt mine used to work people from Ocna de Jos who also had the property right over the mine. But more locals used to work in the wood exploitation and manufacture domain, starting with the middle of the last century 200 persons used to work at the Praid matches factory. Besides these, the locals in Praid used to grow animals and work the land. Starting with the last century many foreigners moved to the city, as well. The charcoal prepared in the area, the sawn wood and the wood for the ships arrived in France and England. Until the May 4th, 1944, the Jews from the city were the catalyzer of the commercial life. The Armenians’ descendants disappeared from Praid only in the near past.
There is a salted water park set up in Praid, and near the water park there are hot salted bathes (in tubs), the salted water being heated in cauldrons. These bathings are very efficient in treating the rheumatism. The salted bathes act over the entire body having the following effects: relief, anti-inflammatory, vasohypotonic, skin and mucous sterilizer, healing.
The bathe duration is from 10 minutes per day, up to 30 minutes, depending on the individual capacity. The hot water’s temperature is of 36 degrees. A tub treatment consists of 10-14 continuous hot bathes. The salted bathes function during the period of June 1st- October 25th .

Treatment base in the underground
One of the largest salt mines in the country and in Europe is the Praid Salt Mine whose historic beginnings date since the Roman age.
Through massive salt exploitations, there were huge underground gaps, where a salt mine microclimate has individualized, with relatively constant temperatures, between 14-16 Celsius degrees, low humidity 66-70% and a pressure higher than the one from the ground surface.
The air is strongly ionized, very efficient in treating the respiratory affections. Here, underground rest homes were developed, the underground treatment started in the 1960’s, in the Gh. Doja mine. On a distance of 1250 meters from the entrance until the treatment base, the persons transportation is made with the saline buses. During the summer season, the number of persons who visit the mine and the number of diseased who come to treat is of 2500-3000/day.
The underground halls are fitted with a lightning system, playgrounds for children, an ecumenic church, buffet, TV-s, all these intended to offer entertainment for the diseased, who are obliged to spend maximum 4 hours/day in here.
Since the XVth century, the salt in Praid was called “Szeckler salt”, as the name of this area (“the Salt Area” or “the Saltworks Area”). The salt from Praid was the one who along the centuries has offered “the bread” to the locals and last but not least, it offered the taste and soul of the Szeckler and Transylvanian food.
One can only hope, not without reasons, that the attraction of Praid - and of the unique Land of Salt – shall rise in the future as well. We can state that, the one who had once rested in here, benefited of the beauty of nature and enjoyed the locals’ hospitality – gained lifetime memories.
Returning here: is a life joy.
